Halloween Potions
/Last year we had a funnest family Halloween party – actually it was the first Halloween party we’ve ever had! Thanks to Covid, everyone came because they couldn’t go trick-or-treating. I’ll be sharing more things about the party next week, but for today I want to share my science lab kitchen window of potions.
One of my good friends I met during the Olympics, here in Salt Lake City, taught me how to do this. KJ is the Queen of Halloween!!! Actually, she is the Queen of EVERYTHING!!! When I grow up, I want to be just like her! She posted a picture of her “science lab” on Facebook last year, and I had to call and find out how she did it. The liquid looked so clear and colorful! Her secret . . . dishwashing soap! That’s it . . . just different colors of dishwashing soap! Her husband was a scientist at the University of Utah and had a lot of bottles, beakers, flasks and vials for her to use. Some of very old antiques that are stunning! You can see how much better my own collection became after she gave me some of her precious containers!!! I will cherish them always!!!
Here’s the scoop on the dish soap. KJ goes to the dollar store and buys the cheap stuff in every color imaginable. I used what I had on hand, and thankfully I had a big selection to choose from in my favorite color combination of blues and greens.
I had a bottle of Joy which is yellow, and a bottle of Ivory which is clear. I also had some dark green Palmolive as well as some blue Dawn and green apple Dawn. KJ also shared how some colors settle at the bottom, creating a fun ombre effect! I mixed others to create different shades within my color scheme. KJ uses the dish soap from her vials throughout the rest of the year, and replaces it with new stuff each Halloween. I used some of mine, but left some as well. It has stayed clear, and still looks like it was poured in yesterday.
After I added the extra beakers, flasks, and pipettes all my window needed was a couple strands of fairy lights strung amongst the collection of wonder!!! In the daytime, the natural daylight made it fun, but it transformed into a magical place at night when the fairy lights came on!!! I have to say, it’s now my most favorite part of my Halloween decorations!!!
My grandkids loved it too. We played with them a little after the party, and added some small pieces of dry ice left over from the home-made rootbeer. The dry ice makes the dish soap react in fun and crazy ways. I left them up all through October, and was a little sad when I had to take them down to decorate for Thanksgiving.
So if you’re looking for an uplifting little different twist to your Halloween décor, this is cheap and easy, especially if you use glass jars you already have around the house!!! But the beakers and flasks definitely make it look more legit. These are available on Amazon!
Can’t wait to share the rest of our decorations and fun from last year’s party next week!! Have some fun, and share your light by serving someone this week!
Love Ya, Les ☺
