Sometimes You Have To Improvise

Do you ever have times where the things you have planned don’t happen as you hoped they would?  I used to use this quote when teaching a leadership segment at Martin’s Cove Handcart Historic Site in Wyoming:  “If you want to hear the Lord laugh, tell Him what YOUR plans are.”  Grandma Camp 2021 was supposed to happen June 11th and 12th . . . this was after we had already re-scheduled twice before.  On June 10th, one family of littles woke up with croup and 102 degree fevers.  They didn’t cry because they were sick, they cried because they thought they would miss out on Grandma Camp!!!  It made me sad they were sick, but happy that Grandma Camp means so much to them!

The other family of littles were also sad, and a few tears were shed because they thought Grandma Camp would be canceled altogether.  So an easy solution came about . . . we would just do a pre-Grandma Camp for one family, and re-schedule the real Grandma Camp for July 9th and 10th.

A little concerned about what to do with the custom macaron cakes and cookies I had already ordered and paid for, I found out they could be frozen in airtight plastic containers, and thawed when we are ready to use them.

We ended up having a fun weekend anyway.  Three littles came and we set up their Grandma Camp tents in the family room as usual. Grandpa Ronnie did sandwich runs to Cutler’s for lunch, and Subway for dinner.  Normally we do homemade mini pizzas for dinner, but we will save that for July.

We did do something fun with mini watermelons that was not planned for the original Grandma Camp.  Using a pineapple coring kitchen gadget from Williams Sonoma that I already had, I cut the top end off the watermelon, and cored the contents out using the pineapple coring gadget.  The original plan was to blend the watermelon up and mix it with Seltzer water and muddled mint leaves, but upon trying that with the contents of the first watermelon, the littles decided they wanted Sprite inside their watermelon drink cup instead.  So we all ended up in our hammocks in the backyard, drinking Sprite out of our watermelon cups with a straw, and eating the left over watermelon as a snack before watching the new Disney movie “Luca” from our Grandma Camp tents.

Saturday also didn’t turn out as expected as our swimming pool outing fell through due to unforeseen circumstances with my cousin’s schedule and her pool not being available.  But we had fun soaking our feet in a galvanized tub, making bracelets galore, eating ramen for lunch and finishing off the day with more time in the hammocks!

Who says you can’t have fun when your plans don’t turn out how you thought they would?!!!  We had fun, shared LIGHT, and can’t wait until July for the real Grandma Camp!!!

Love Ya, Les
