Grandma Camp comes to life – Part One -2019

This post is the first of a two or three part series, there is a lot to cover!  The idea for “Grandma Camp” evolved three years ago.  My oldest daughter works with the teenage girls in her church group.  As part of her calling, this includes going to girl’s camp each summer.  She asked me if I could help her with her three girls while she was gone for the week and I happily agreed!

Wanting the girls to have a fun time, I began wracking my brain to think of some fun activities for them to do during the week they were with me.  I had them all come up with a list of things they wanted to do while their mom was at girl’s camp.  We actually accomplished most of the things on their list that week!  I added one more thing to their list – making cars out of cardboard boxes for a “Drive-In-Movie” night.  I had some rather large Amazon boxes I had been saving for this very purpose.  I took the girls to Hobby Lobby and let them choose the paint colors as well as decorations to embellish and individualize their own car.  We came home and I spread a large piece of plastic sheeting out on the back patio, and they went to work.  One thing I LOVE about my grand-daughters, is how much they love to craft!!!  Must be in the genes right?!!!  They had so much fun making their cars and putting their own personal touches into each one.

This is when the thought began to formulate about turning this into a yearly activity, and “Grandma Camp” was born.  Because we did many other activities that week, the cars took longer than I anticipated and the girls were just finishing their cars when their parents came to pick them up.  Together, we made a plan to choose another weekend sleepover, and carefully put their cars in the unfinished part of our basement to finish drying.

I decided the age of ability to attend Grandma Camp would be for all those who were potty-trained.  This meant one more grand-daughter needed to make a car before Grandma Camp could take place.  I dropped off her box, favorite color paints, and all the things she would need to make her car and she went to work, with the help of her mom and dad.  We got her car picked up when it was finished and brought it back to begin setting up the “Drive-In-Movie” part of Grandma Camp.  Next week’s post will go more in depth with the activities and favors I put together for our first annual Grandma Camp.

Until then, enjoy the beauty of summer and think of a fun family activity to do together as you continue to Light the World!

Love Ya,  Les
