The Gift of Service – A Month of Thankful Gratitude

Last week Ronnie came down with a bad chest cold.  He doesn’t get sick often, but when he does, he gets really sick.  When our daughter heard that he was not feeling well, she dropped everything and made him some homemade chicken noodle soup and a loaf of her signature homemade French bread.  She’s a busy mom of three daughters, all kind and caring in their own right, and blessed with their mother’s big heart.  She’d had a crazier than usual busy Monday, yet in the midst of her own trials and struggles she made time to run not only to our rescue, but also serving two other families as well!

We were not the only recipients of the homemade goods.  She dropped soup and bread off to our son’s family who was also under the weather, and one more loaf of bread to a family in her neighborhood who have a tendency of making life unpleasant for all who live by them.

She kept one loaf of bread and a little bit of soup to feed her family just one small meal.  Quite often she will make her bread and then pray to know who to take it to.  When the name of this difficult woman first came to mind, she struggled – not knowing how it would be received, or if it would even be welcomed.  It’s easy to serve those we love, and who love us back; however, it takes great courage to drop something off to someone who for the most part is like trying to hug a porcupine.  Yet she followed through with the prompting she had received.

That soup fed Ronnie and I for three full days nourishing both body and soul!  Just as we were running out of bread, a friend I’ve known since high school, dropped by with three huge pumpkin shaped bread bowls from “Great Harvest Bread Company”.  She didn’t know Ronnie was sick, but wanted to say thank you for some things I had helped her with for Christmas.

The service didn’t end there!  As I was finishing up the week of busy projects and appointments, another dear friend sent a text asking if I was home.  The next thing I knew, her daughter brought two small loaves of her own signature bread made with my favorite “Food Nanny” Kamut flour bread recipe.

They say man cannot live by bread alone, but I have to say, last week we not only lived on the bread and soup delivered to our home, but our spirits were also fed by the kind acts of service.  We never know the impact a kind act of service will have on someone, but when we are sharing LIGHT, love, and compassion, the blessings come to both the giver and the receiver.

I’m so grateful for the LIGHT givers in my life!  They will never know how much it means to me to know I am loved!  It’s much easier to give than to receive, but both are equally important!  May you be blessed this week to be the receiver of someone else’s LIGHT!  In this month of gratitude, may our focus of being THANKFUL for the blessings received in so many ways, permeate our every thought and deed.  November is the perfect opportunity to give and receive the blessings of LIGHT filled service.  Have a great week.

Love Ya, Les :)
